Call for papers – I International Feminist Marxism Conference

Call for papers – I International Feminist Marxism Conference
April 22-26, 2024 – University of São Paulo

Let nothing define us. Let nothing hold us.
Let freedom be our own substance.
Simone de Beauvoir

The I International Feminist Marxism Conference invites everyone to discuss the possible – and necessary – relations between Marxism and Feminism, considering some questions and themes. How can works that advance the feminist debate contribute to Marxism? What are the continuities, discontinuities, and determinations among gender, race, and class? What are the relations between gender and capitalist accumulation at different historical moments? And in the dynamics of contemporary capitalist exploitation? How does the separation between capital production and social reproduction create gender inequalities? And to what extent do theories that separate these spheres reproduce such inequalities? To what extent does combining Marxism and Feminism open up our possibilities for the future? How can Feminism contribute to re-reading the Marxist debate on art, the artistic canon, and rediscovering a new aesthetic? Questions like these are the driving force behind the Conference.

This conference aims to contribute to deepening the process of “feminization” and “queerization” of Marxism, carried out by different generations of theorists and activists, given how central the issue of gender, linked to issues of class, race, and sexuality, are both to understanding capitalism and to our political and academic practices. Unfortunately, we see that, despite having made fundamental progress, there are still inequalities in these debates within our tradition. We believe that it is high time that Marxism and Marxists rose to the challenges of the 21st century, and this necessarily involves moving forward and following the legacy opened up by Marxists and feminists over the last few years.

To bring together and put into dialogue works and reflections that have been carried out by those who research, the organizing committee of the I International Feminist Marxism Conference, to be held between April 22 and 26, 2024, at the Faculty of Philosophy, Literature and Humanities of the University of São Paulo (FFLCH/USP), invites everyone to send their abstracts to the Working Groups according to the specifications that follow.
